Main page redesign
Open, HighPublic

Description

The main page is one of the first pages that a new user sees when they visit the site and can definitely do with a rework.

At the very least we should include (as soon as possible) some kind of "Contribute!" section to help potential editors learn to edit and find things they can help out with.

corey changed the visibility from "All Users" to "Public (No Login Required)".Oct 8 2018, 3:53 PM

From discussion on Discord last night:
"The focus of it being "uh here are some anime characters I guess" has always bothered me. Even besides the debate of whether the anime or the game is more important (in my personal opinion it's admittedly they game), even granting that it's the anime that's not a super engaging way to go about it"

I'll let Dan and Kyrus copy their own comments over if they choose

It would be great to make the main sections of the Wiki visible from the moment a user visits the main page. TCG/OCG, Anime, Manga, Duel Links and even other media (not necessarily in this order)

A lot of people probably don't even acknowledge we have articles about Duel Links. As such, linking the main page to recent events from all Yu-Gi-Oh!-related media can certainly increase user awareness, and let them know that we cover nearly all sections of modern Yu-Gi-Oh.

What would you think about making the main page more of a central hub and having individual "main pages" for each of the main sections you described? Sorta similar to https://www.wikipedia.org/?

I believe Dan suggested something similar, and I like the idea.

Anime/manga card articles are already separated from OCG/TCG ones, and in the future, Duel Links cards will also have their own separate article, which should allow visitors to browse exactly what they need, and interact with other hubs only if they wish to.

https://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/One_Piece_Wiki does something similar, which also looks pretty good to me.

For my comment that was put on Discord, it refers to the "latest set" we have on display. Currently, we only display the latest TCG Main Booster (FLOD, CYHO, etc). My suggestion is to possibly include the latest OCG set in addition, likely as a tab that can change between OCG and TCG.

Another suggestion would be to include booster packs other than Main Boosters. Examples include the Deck Build Pack, Duelist Pack, and Collectors Pack, among others. This is to make it easier to look up popular card sets like Legend Duelist. Instead of always having to look them up on the search bar.

The last suggestion is something I haven't myself expressed on Discord, it's displaying the Upcoming Sets and Booster Packs that have yet to be released. This will make it easier for visitors who want to check on the upcoming sets, such as (at the time of writing this comment) Legend Duelist 4, while also giving editors an easy way to access the pages we need to edit.

I understand that we may have limitations with incorporating all of these elements into the homepage at the same time. But it has been done before, specifically on the Cardfight Vanguard wiki homepage http://cardfight.wikia.com/wiki/Cardfight!!_Vanguard_Wiki which actually implements this to great effect

I'm largely concerned about implementing it on mobile. Tabs for example, probably wouldn't work well.
In terms of design though, I do like the ideas postulated here. While I'm all for the concept of "hubs", I do wonder if they can actually be implemented, and how much of a load it would be on the site.

Dinoguy1000 raised the priority of this task from Normal to High.Dec 23 2018, 11:35 PM

Raising importance; we need to get this done.

I had previously provided dino with the next step in this project, which was a breakdown of screenspace and the value of each section of that space. We need to as a community decide what we value to what importance, and occupy the space appropriately.

I'm personally of the opinion that the physical card game should be the first priority, followed by the anime, then duel links, the manga, and finally the older video games. Things like 'most recent episode' and 'most recent set' for example currently show japans episode but north america/europes set and that seems inconsistent and stupid. At the very least could make tcg and ocg tabs for those boxes, and populate both, with a default of tcg.

I also think the highest value area of the home page is the big news box with all upcoming products sorted by release date in both regions.
